EN19

EN19, also recognized 708M40 in BS 970 standard, is a high-quality alloy steel for general mechanical and engineering purposes. EN19 steel is characterized by its 1% chromium and molybdenum content. It is also regarded as equivalent steel grade to 42CrMo4 steel in EN standard or 4140 steel in ASTM standard. EN19 steel material is known for its excellent combination of toughness, strength, and wear resistance. It is widely used to make components for machinery, automotive parts, gears, shafts, axles, and other applications. The “EN” prefix indicates that EN19 conforms to European standards, and the number “19” specifies a particular steel grade within the EN standards.

5. Steel EN 19 Heat Treatment and Hardening

EN19 material can be hardened by heat treatment process where it is heated at 845°C, followed by oil quenching. Before the hardening process, it can be normalized by heating at 913°C for an extended duration, followed by air cooling. The oil quenching process is initiated from a temperature of 85°C/88°C Celsius.

Tempering

EN19 alloy steel can be tempered within the range of 205 to 649°C, depending on the desired hardness level. The steel’s hardness can be enhanced by reducing the tempering temperature. For instance, a tensile strength of 225 ksi can be achieved by tempering at 316°C (600°F), while a tensile strength of 130 ksi can be achieved by tempering at 538°C (1000°F).

Annealing

heat to 680-700°c , then cool in furnace.

Normalising

heat 870°c – 900°c and cool in still air.

Stress relieving

annealed: 600-650°c heat in needed.
hardened: 500-550°c heat in needed.

6. EN19 Alloy Steel Applications and Uses

EN19 alloy steel is highly versatile and used widely for different applications in various industries:

  • Axles, drive shafts, and crankshaft connecting rods
  • High tensile bolts, studs, and propeller shaft joints
  • Rifle barrels and induction hardened pins
  • Gears, pinions, shafts, and spindles
  • Oil & Gas industries

7. Conclusion

EN 19 alloy steel stands out for its high tensile strength, versatility, and adaptability to various heat treatment processes. Its unique combination of chromium and molybdenum makes it a preferred choice for applications requiring high strength and durability. Whether it’s automotive components, machinery parts, or in the Oil & Gas industry, EN19 material has proven its mettle time and again.
